SEGMENT: SPECIALTY PROTECTIVE PACKAGING

Problem: LTL shipments were incurring damage when shipping our customer’s high-end entry doors. The cost of each door ranges in price from $400 to $2000. Damaged corners were costing our customer six figures annually in freight damage claims.

Solution : Greif custom-developed a special corrugated protector for the brickmold.

Result: The customer reported that the Greif protective packaging eliminated virtually all of the damage encountered in LTL shipments.

Additional problem: This customer was also looking to reduce the labor and material costs of cutting and assembling the all-wooden packaging they were using to protect each door.

Solution: Greif custom-designed a special two-piece package to completely enclose and protect the doors. It required no wood and was easily set up and assembled.

Result: The new package completely eliminated freight damage and cut the customers packaging cost in half — this resulted in annual savings of over $150,000 in packaging costs alone! In addition, they had no freight claims and/or damages to their shipments once they started using our custom-designed protective packaging.

SEGMENT: FOOD / BEVERAGE INDUSTRY

Problem: A large food producer with one location won a huge contract with a very large retailer, but freight rates to ship all orders by truck made freight costs a real problem. Shipping by boxcar was an option, but only if they could get their products to their very important customer in good condition every time.

Solution : Greif developed a load-securement system specifically designed for their products, package types, unit sizes, etc. The customer then negotiated a contract to insure a reliable supply of boxcars. They also established a forward distribution point closer to the retailer’s distribution centers.

Result: The cost of Greif’s Load-Securement System was a very small investment when compared to the cost the producer and retailer would incur when shipping by truck. That savings was over $1,000,000 annually!

SEGMENT: CHEMICAL INDUSTRY

Problem: Our customer was custom-building extensive length-wise wood blocking and bracing in container shipments of their chemicals in drums. The problem was the cost of the wood components, the time and cost of the labor to build the wood blocking and bracing, and safety.

Solution : Greif developed a load pattern and recommended the use of our Pal-Kor®. This reduced the amount of wood bracing by half, while providing reliable freight bracing and product protection.

Result: The savings to our customer was over $35,000 per year. Using Greif’s freight bracing and damage prevention system also reduced the customer’s exposure to safety hazards by reducing the amount of custom-cut wood bracing by half in these shipments.

SEGMENT: BUILDING MATERIALS INDUSTRY

Problem: A shipper of building materials was using large, heavy, wood bulkheads in their boxcar shipments. Due to the size and weight of the wood bulkheads and the multiple steel straps used to secure them, employee safety was a serious concern.

Solution : Greif re-designed a load pattern, eliminating the partial top layers by double-stacking more units of product. The customer now uses Pal-Kor® to brace the additional lengthwise void space in the boxcar created by the additional double stacking. They also use Wood-Kor® and Greif’s Sure-Size® Air bags to brace and protect their shipments from potential shift and damage to their products.

Result: Eliminating the partial top layers in the shipment accomplished multiple improvements:

It eliminated the cost and safety concern of using the steel straps
It reduced the number of employees needed to load and brace these shipments from three to two
It reduced the time needed from four hours to under two

While the cost of the load securement and damage prevention materials in the shipments increased by approximately $15,000 annually, the 70% reduction in man-hours reduced labor costs by over $275,000 annually, and eliminated a significant safety concern.

SEGMENT: WINDOW PACKAGING and SPECIALTY PROTECTIVE PACKAGING

Problem: This window manufacturer was using EPS foam to protect their windows from edge damage while moving through the supply chain. Their customers were unhappy with this due to frequent breaking of the EPS foam. This breakage resulted in some product damage and presented the difficult task of cleaning up the broken foam protectors.

Solution : Greif’s protective packaging for windows offered the right combination of performance reliability, cost-effectiveness, and durability for this customer.

Result: The customer is now using a stronger and cleaner corrugated edge protection for their windows that does not break apart and fail, like EPS foam. This customer reduced their costs of this type of protective packaging by over 5% and improved the satisfaction level of their customers by eliminating the nuisance of trying to sweep or clean up broken foam.

Additional result: In continued work with this customer, we identified an opportunity to reduce their protective packaging inventory by designing and combining our edge protection for windows with a corner protector they were already using. This eliminated an inventory item and reduced inventory costs and administrative costs to manage that item and supplier. It also reduced the time needed to attach the protective packaging to the windows, reducing labor and increasing efficiencies.
