The Greif Global Sustainability Award
Every job is a green job. Every person is responsible for conducting his or her work in the most sustainable way possible.
For years, we have been embedding the Greif Business System into everything we do. We've used its tools to be more efficient. We've adjusted our processes to be more productive. We've attacked waste in all its forms. It's been good for our business.
And it's been good for the environment as well.
To reinforce the fact the good business is environmentally responsible, we introduced a program to encourage all Greif associates to consider the sustainabilitiy of their decisions at work. We called it the Greif Global Sustainability Award program.
The Greif Global Sustainability Award recognizes superior effort and achievement in furthering the improvement of the environment and the company. This Award recognizes the environmentally focused activities of teams.
The first nominations
For 2010, we had more than 30 nominations representing a total dollar savings of more than $17 million. In line with the intent of the program, just from these nominations alone we documented an environmental impact of
- 118 million pounds of CO2 averted,
- 3.6 million pounds of waste eliminated and
- 1.5 million gallons of water saved.
The first winners
The first recipient of this award, bestowed in January 2011, is Greif's entire Latin America strategic business unit. The organization has tackled the reduction of their energy use, embracing energy excellence to the extent of taking their commitment home with them. They developed training and delivered it to all workers, and in the proces effected a cultural change and generated a passion for conservation.
Consistent with their commitment, this Award is not the capstone of their efforts. Their goal for 2011 is to reduce energy consumption by 10 percent over 2010, and begin to work on reducing their water consumption. They are also institutionalizing Greif's zero waste initiative.
