Container-board

Overview

Containerboard is a paperboard used to make corrugated boxes and other packaging materials. It is made from a combination of paper pulp, recycled paper, and other materials and is chosen for its strength and durability. Containerboard makes boxes for a wide range of products, including food, beverages, consumer goods, industrial products, and containers for shipping and storage. Envelopes and paper bags also use containerboard.

Paperboard is a paper-based material used in various applications, including packaging, construction, and printing. It is made from pulp, created by breaking down wood fibers or old corrugated containers using mechanical or chemical processes. Paperboard is typically thicker and more rigid than paper but is also lightweight and easy to cut, fold, and shape. Some common types of paperboard include corrugated sheets (commonly referred to as cardboard), which get converted for use as boxes and other packaging materials.

SUSTAINABILITY SERVICES

Made with 100% Recycled Paperboard

The circular economy is an economic system that intends to be regenerative and restorative, aiming to minimize waste and maximize resource use. Reusing old corrugated materials as a key material in paperboard makes the material sought after by companies seeking better alignment with circularity and sustainability. In a circular economy, resources are in use as long as possible, while the waste and by-products of one process become inputs for another. This closed-loop system is in contrast to the traditional linear economy based on a “take, make, use, dispose of” model.

Common types of containerboard

There are several different grades of containerboard, which are classified based on the weight and thickness of the paperboard. The most common grades are:

  • Linerboard: This is the outer layer of a corrugated box, providing the strength and support needed to hold the box’s contents.
  • Medium: This is the inner layer of a corrugated box sandwiched between the linerboard and the corrugating medium. It provides additional strength and support to the box.
  • Corrugating medium: This layer of paperboard gives corrugated boxes their distinctive wavy shape. It is sandwiched between the linerboard and the medium and provides the bulk of the strength and support for the box.
