As an employer, neighbor, customer and supplier in over 50 countries, we strive to have a positive impact in the communities in which we operate and contribute to their future viability. This forms an integral part of our sustainability agenda. We are involved in diverse projects worldwide. We support initiatives that reach out to as many people as possible and have long-lasting impact. In 2016, Greif's donations at a local level equalled more than $600,000.
We engage with people and partner with various organizations to support sustainable projects and causes. We encourage our employees to take part in projects where their skills and knowledge can benefit the wider community on a sustainable basis. Each site across the globe selects activities appropriate for their community. For example, our employees in China developed a program called Loving Hearts for Old People, for which they volunteer their time to help the elderly.
Our community projects also provide opportunities for employees to develop team-building and leadership skills enhancing employee engagement. We bring together motivated employees from all over the world and give them the means to make a real difference.
For the past five years, we have been sponsoring a week of camp at Recreation Unlimited for youth ages 8 to 22 with both physical and developmental disabilities. Volunteers from Greif also assist as camper buddies by providing help to camp counselors in addition to providing assistance to maintain the camping grounds.
Greif is a participant of The Heart Walk, the American Heart Association's premiere event for raising funds to save lives from the No. 1 and No. 4 killers in America - heart disease and stroke. Selected Greif future leaders participated in Habitat for Humanity’s 2012 Carter Work Project in Léogâne, Haiti, which was at the epicenter of the 2010 earthquake. They worked side by side with 600 other volunteers and 100 Haitian families to build homes for the displaced families. Employees gained more than they gave as they left Haiti with new lifelong friends, a new world perspective and a renewed passion for service.
A home creates stability for families and children, increasing educational and job prospects. Greif employees in Columbus built a permanent, Habitat for Humanityhome with Lifestyle Communities for a local family in need.
Greif has supported and worked with People In Need (PIN), a United Way Agency serving the needs of Delaware County in Ohio, since 2002. During this period, Greif’s contributions included donating food, equipment and materials to expand PIN’s services from 34,000 meals a year in 2008 to more than 125,000 in 2014, the relocation into a new, modern warehouse office complex, setting up and designing PIN’s new data management system, and providing on-going IT monitoring, tech support and logistical expertise. Greif employee volunteers regularly provide their expertise to improve processes and systems within PIN and donate their time to participate in monthly Produce Market Events, where they distribute food to families in need. Since 2008, Greif has donated more than $210,000 to PIN.
In support of the global Pink October campaign, Greif Latin America employees wore pink for one day in the month of October to increase awareness about breast cancer. Employees were given information about the disease and the importance of early detection. They were also encouraged to share this information with their families and friends.
