GREIF BARRIER TECHNOLOGIES

High-Performance Barriers That Safeguard What Matters Most

Keep It Inside The Bottle

We design and manufacture containers that do more than hold products, they actively protect what matters most. Greif’s expertise in barrier science and technology helps keep your product exactly where it belongs: inside the package, not absorbed into the container walls or released into the surrounding environment.

Because when product integrity is critical, effective barriers—and responsible protection—aren’t optional. Below are some of the risks associated with insufficient barrier performance.

Product Stability

Reduced Shelf-Life: Products may degrade or spoil faster

Product Integrity: Migration between product and packaging, solvent loss, and solids precipitation

Environmental Impact

Product Spoilage: Degradation due to phase separation and particle size changes

Recyclability: Inability to reuse packaging due to contamination

Chemical Waste: Leaking packaging resulting in environmental contamination

Sustainable Barrier Technologies

Plasma SiOx

A high‑performance, glass‑like coating is applied to inner surface of the HDPE packaging, Plasma SiOx delivers exceptional protection against solvent permeation and product/package interaction, without impacting recyclability. Ideal for applications requiring advanced purity and shelf‑life protection.

  • Consistent individual treatment
  • Excellent solvent barrier
  • Excellent gas barrier
  • Low mass gain
  • 100% Recyclable, enabling Bottle-to-Bottle
  • Mono-material
  • Fluorine-free packaging
  • Compliant with FDA & EFSA

In-Mold Barrier | IMB

Integrated directly into the inner surface of the container during manufacturing, In‑Mold Barrier technology offers a highly consistent barrier to solvent permeation that has been established over many decades. This approach has excellent resistance to solvent permeation while maintaining the strengthen and performance of the container.

  • Proven and highly consistent technology –
  • Precise control of the barrier process
  • Excellent individual treatment solvent barrier
  • Low mass gain
  • 100% Recyclable, enabling bottle-to-bottle
  • Compliant with US and EU PFAS regulations

EcoEx

EcoEx® provides robust chemical resistance through a multilayer barrier system designed to prevent permeation while supporting sustainability goals. This solution enables safer storage and transport of aggressive contents while aligning with evolving regulatory requirements.

  • Proven technology with excellent solvent barrier
  • Excellent oxygen barrier with EVOH
  • Available with a PA or EVOH barrier layer
  • Extended material lifecycle compared to COEX
  • Recyclable as HDPE, enabling Bottle-to-Bottle – Alianza Lab
  • APR testing successfully completed
  • SENAI lab testing successfully completed

QUALITY: a global promise, proven locally with every run.

Independent 3rd Party Testing Approved – Bottle to Bottle – UN certification, Stress Cracking, and Recyclability Testing Approved.

To make a good bottle, you need to choose the right material, design it around the customer’s needs, make it match those specifications, and test it for quality.

Quality testing for bottles ensures they work well and meet standards. Physical tests check strength and consistency through pressing, dropping, and measuring. Leak and seal tests ensure the bottle holds liquid and the cap fits properly. Dimensions are verified with calipers or 3D scanners to ensure fit. Environmental tests simulate real-world conditions with UV light and temperature changes. Chemical tests check for the release of harmful substances.
