Local Story

The History is Rich at Greif Riverville

The location, Greif Riverville, which sits along a bend in the James River, was formed as Virginia Fibre Corporation in October 1973 by Robert C. Macauley. He had held several sales and marketing positions in the industry and wanted to create an independent mill to produce a semi-chemical corrugating medium. He envisioned a state-of-the-art facility providing the independent and integrated containerboard industry with unequaled quality, service, and supply continuity.

Mr. Macauley envisioned a “Partnership in Progress” built on teamwork and respect for each individual contributor, offering a financial reward for outstanding team performance. Virginia Fibre started production on August 22, 1975.

In July 1991, Greif Bros. Corporation became the parent company of Virginia Fibre. In November 1997, Virginia Fibre was merged into the Containerboard Business Group of Greif and changed its name to Greif Bros. Corporation – Riverville Mill.

In 2003, the mill’s parent company changed its name to Greif, Inc., and in 2004, the name of the mill changed to Greif Riverville, LLC.

In 2019, Riverville became a part of Greif’s Paper Packaging division.

Greif Bros. Corporation was initially founded in 1877 as a manufacturer of wooden barrels and has expanded over the years into other container and packaging product lines manufactured from steel, paper, and plastic.

Greif believes that the individual actions of all employees, guided by a shared commitment to excellence and teamwork, will ensure the company’s long-term economic success in the highly competitive paper and packaging industry.

Greif – Riverville Mill was proud to celebrate its 45th Anniversary of operation on August 22, 2020.

Riverville plays a vital role in the Greif organization. The OCC (Old Corrugated Container) plant takes in 1,250 tons daily. As a net-positive recycler, paper packaging from Greif is a critical component in the circularity and sustainability targets of Greif and Greif customers.
