Cannabis Industry Growth Sprouts New Uses for Greif Drums

Once considered a taboo industry, the cannabis market is growing like a weed. Last year, Canada became the first industrialized country in the world to legalize recreational marijuana. In the United States, two-thirds of states have approved marijuana usage in some capacity.

With the increased demand comes increased need for cannabis growers to refine their grow practices to ensure they can maximize volume while delivering on their artisanal maker-type product. One important step to cannabis growers is the curing phase. Curing breaks down much of the chlorophyll in the plant. Experts believe that cycling the marijuana through periods of being sealed in a container, and then exposing it to the air for up to three months, results in optimal taste, smell and potency.

Currently there is no standard approach to curing, each grower
crafts their own approach. The largest outdoor grower in the United States, Los Suenos Farms, had evaluated several curing vessels and found Greif’s Lok-Rim® Fibre Drum provides an ideal environment for curing. “We tested several different containers and found Greif’s fibre drum offered the right percentage of natural evaporation for an ideal cure,” said Ketch DeGabrielle, Los Suenos Farms. Los Suenos Farms was recently featured in a documentary on the Growers Network for their growing practices during each phase.

Most of the cannabis growers utilizing Greif drums work through our distributors. If you have an interest in learning more about curing with a Greif drum, go to Grow.Greif.com.
